Japan - a story of love and hate

If you have an hour to spare I would really recommend watching this BBC documentary of the life of one man living in rural Japan, suffering the effects of  the 'bubble burst' of the early 90's. It gives an incredible insight into such a closed door society and those who live in poverty. While it does not represent everyone in Japan, it is a unique and heart wrenching story filled with interesting characters, humour,  brutal honesty and some sad truths about the current state of Japan.

Cheeky dance moves

One of my not so guilty pleasures is watching songs from Indian movies of the 60's and 70's. They're the perfect amount of cheesiness, cheekiness and romance. The boys and the girls never kiss, the dance moves are ridiculous and the fashion is so so good! Dhadkan Har Dil Ki is a perfect example and the good news is there's an abundance floating around on YouTube.

The drawings of Mike Mills

I watched the movie the Beginners in the weekend and it was just so lovely. Written and directed by Mike Mills, it is  based very heavily on his life and his amazing drawings popped up throughout the film. It really was so lovely so if you haven't see it I recommend you do. I was mostly smiling but there was the occasional tear too. Luckily I was by myself, haha. Watching it made me feel a lot better about feeling human and all the mistakes I've made. It's never to late for a new beginning!

AND I didn't even know it but he's married to Miranda July. Dream team!

Karma gods

I've been so lucky of late with all kinds of goodness finding its way to me. My postman has been a super busy dropping off some gems this week. I received a beautifully wrapped package from my best friend Lucy, filled with NZ goodness, and an amazing letter set gifted from the lovely Hello Sandwich. Kawaiiii! Lucky me.

Then finding out about The Kitten Covers courtesy of Cat Party. Oh. My. Goodness.

Miranda July's The Future - "A Handy Tip For The Easily Distracted" from robgwilson.com on Vimeo.

And watching the trailer and deleted scene for Miranda July's The Future. It's so exciting. I can't wait to see it! You can see more on the movie here.

and Yotam Ottolenghi's food blog for the Guardian. YUM.

A good week!

Badlands

"He wanted to die with me and I dreamed of being lost forever in his arms."

I watched Badlands for the first time last night and it was so wonderful. Sissy Spacek is such an unusual and interesting actress, and the story was near perfect. It's based loosely on the real life shooting spree of Charles Starkweather and Caril Ann Fugate. Rather than focusing on the murders the movie seems more intent on capturing two peculiar souls and their bizarre journey. It was beautiful to watch.

♡ Enid

Finding this image via いいもの made me so happy. Enid would be my style hero if I was a million times braver. If you haven't seen or read Ghost World, I think you should!

Water soaked film

Oops! I've been carrying film around in my bag, which has been sitting in my mamachari basket as I bicycle around, and it's rainy season. As a result my film got a little bit wet. I kind of like the blue tinge it gave to some of my photos. These snaps have been taken out and about. I've been having lots of fun on the weekends! x I'll pop up some black and white snaps soon.

These days

Stanley Chow
Max Dalton

Eric Chase Anderson

I love the art work that has come out The Royal Tenenbaums. I revisited the film the other night and ah, that moment when Margot gets off the bus, and Nico's 'these days' is playing. So good! If only life was more like a Wes Anderson film.

Sleeping beauty

“Death-haunted, quietly reckless, Lucy is a young university student who takes a job as a Sleeping Beauty. In the Sleeping Beauty Chamber old men seek an erotic experience that requires Lucy’s absolute submission. This unsettling task starts to bleed into Lucy’s daily life and she develops an increasing need to know what happens to her when she is asleep.”

Directed by Julia Leigh and produced by Jane Campion, Sleeping Beauty looks amazing.
